My absolute favorite solo-study coffee shop within the loop. Extremely clean, modern hole in the wall spot that serves good, but not the best coffee in the area. However, the venue more than makes up for its very slight shortcomings in the drink space.

A very narrow and not-so wide venue that has some AMAZING seats that honestly allow me to study for hours! There is something to be said for properly chosen decor that fits their target audience - people who go there to work. A lot of coffee shops aren't exactly optimized for that type of crowd and focus mostly on the quality and the atmosphere, but Inversion has done it right and for that, I will always be a loyal customer. I'm not looking for the best coffee imaginable, im looking for great coffee and the best spot to work - and Inversion fits that mold.

    * Come here to study among other adults of all ages, and have a relatively quiet but not completely silent and very chic work-from-home day.

    * Don't come here for their coffee, tea, or prices. Secondly, you won't find a spacious environment here; I have never had to not brush past someone. Plus, you'll probably get a few glares, minimum, every time you come in.

I've been at Inversion Coffee House a few times because I wanted to find a place to study. They have a rainbow painted on their windows, and indoor and outdoor seating. Their bar is in the back, too, which feels nice; I don't like feeling like I'm being accosted the second I walk into a space. The seating is alright, and I haven't had any back problems because of their chairs. The wood decoration is very cute, and they have rainbow metal spoons for you to eat their gelato with.

Despite it being a space where I can sit for a long time, feeling like I'm out enjoying public but there isn't too much noise, I still feel very uncomfortable here. Every time I enter, people leer or stare at me. Some are just glances, and there has been a time where someone stared at me for several minutes. I'm not sure if the customers there are the type to all stare, or if it's because I'm one of the three total black people that I've seen in there. The customers aren't the cafe's fault, but I felt it important to include in this review.

What the cafe does have a problem with is the food quality. Not everything tastes bad, but for a place where people are allowed to sit for long periods of time, their caffeine options should taste nice. Their tea tastes like it's been steeped in lukewarm, unfiltered water from the sink. I'm a tea fan and have even made that mistake myself at home, and I couldn't even finish their tea. Their coffee is also one of the worse I've had. And not that I can expect a cafe to have meals, but I am pretty disappointed that I can't find something of substance to keep me going through a work session; they only have muffins and gelato and other sweets, which is not energizing for me.

I love inversion for its atmosphere, but I have to say that they have the worst and drinks of any coffee shop I've ever been to. They get 4* for location (therefore this is a pretty personal bias), and ambiance. Hell, even the parking can be a hit or miss so really I should be giving this place 3* but I come here so often that it gets bumped up to 4* (LOL).

Studying: I personally really enjoy the open or window seating and everyone here is in study mode so it never gets noisy. The WiFi has only been crappy once out of the thousand times I've been here, so I would say that's pretty stable. There's also no loud music; actually is there even any music? I can't remember hearing anything, which is a huge plus! I'm pretty efficient here.

Drinks: Omg, I've tried multiple drinks and nothing is ever a hit. Might as well get the cheapest thing on the menu (black coffee) and just consider it as paying for sitting down for 6 hours lol. Luckily their daily black has free refills! (But... it tastes sour af).

Food: I've had their breakfast taco and donuts and just no. I think that was the worst donut I've had in my life and I've had a ton of donuts... it was so stale, and the icing was bitter (?!), and it the donut was way too doughy. The breakfast taco is not bad but I don't think they have it all day long. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, there is a taco truck across the street that is delicious!! It's called Tacos Caliente and it's not open all the time so check their hours, but it's a great place to pick up lunch and then head over to Inversion.

We came relatively early at 10:30 am on a bright Sunday morning, and parking was alright. Their parking lot was not that big. They do share it with the Art League of Houston, which was closed on Sundays. So, you'd have a better chance of getting a spot.

Inside, it was decently quiet with lots of bright natural light pouring in. The tables along the wall were kind of small. I was barely able to place my iPad with keyboard and our coffee drinks on it. Our seats weren't very comfortable either. Although, the long tables in the middle and along the glass windows had more room. Service from the baristas was just nice enough. Not more, not less.

As far as their drinks go, their special lattes were of good quality and the latte art was on point. Here's a breakdown of them:

Honey Lavender Latte - This had a subtle lavender taste, and strong espresso finish. It was pretty smooth. But, in my opinion, I believe Slowpokes made this drink better.

Toaster Latte - My favorite. It was not too sweet and had a lovely cinnamon flavor. This was both a smooth and strong espresso drink. I would order this again.

Honey Badger - My sis enjoyed this drink. It had a more subtle cinnamon flavor, but was similar to the Toaster Latte.

Now, I wouldn't come here for the food, unless your only intention was to be fed. We ordered the breakfast tacos (these were not made in-house, but through Morningstar). They just tasted ok. The donuts didn't look too appetizing either.

Overall, I'd come back here for their strong espresso drinks. You can get productive work done here as well. It's also next to the Art League of Houston. So, it would be a nice caffeine stop after touring their gallery or taking an art class. I will be back.

Great coffee shop with a cool art feel in Montrose! With plenty of table space, outlets, natural lighting, and generally quiet atmosphere, this is the perfect place to get your study grind on.

Today I tried their "Houston Smog" drink. It's a freshly brewed black tea, with lavender, and steamed/frothed almond milk on top. It's available hot or cold, but I preferred it hot, and it exceeded expectations! Subtly sweet, with a nice touch of lavender flavor, this tea was very soothing and delicious.

They offer a couple pastries if you're looking for a snack, but I'll definitely be coming back to try their gelato! Come here soon if you're looking for a new study spot!
